"Lena?"
She flicked her gaze to his and gasped. Yellow eyes streaked with green and brown studied her, the odd color complementing the patchwork hair.
Wow. She squeezed her eyes shut, then opened them. Nope, not crazy. She'd thought his feline eyes belonged to the werecat form he'd taken while attacking the other shifters. Apparently not, and these eyes weren't vacant as they'd been then. They were hot, hungry. He looked as if he wanted to eat her alive, but in a good way, one that would leave her begging for more.
Her breath escaped in a long sigh.
"Disgusted?"
She said the only thing she could. "Beautiful. You're the most beautiful man I've ever seen."
"Try not to let the bandage on your stomach get too wet, but the bite on your shoulder is fine."
"Bite on my shoulder?" She slapped her hand over the mark. The raised bumps brushed against her palm. Tingles skipped across her skin. She dropped her hand.
"You...you bit me."
He shrugged as if it was no big deal.
"Yeah, I bit you." His gaze traveled over her body and left a burning path in its wake. "If you need help showering, call me."
"Look at me."
Unable to resist him, she opened her eyes, and his breathtaking ones stared back at her. Strands of patchwork hair framed the face that had occupied her dreams all night. Harshly cut cheekbones, up-tilted eyes and the wider, flatter nose made it unique, a mixture of beauty and power. Devin was the type of man you never forgot. One glimpse and you were hooked.
He knelt next to her on the wrinkled sheets, looking deliciously hot with his disheveled hair, bare chest and loose sweats. She let her gaze travel over him from the bulge in his pants to the lips she wanted on hers.
"You can trust me."
She wanted to. "I need to make sure."
He stretched on the bed next to her and pulled her into his arms. He didn't say anything. He simply held her. The tension in her limbs drained, and she relaxed in his embrace exactly as she'd done in the hotel.
She didn't know how long they snuggled, but finally he placed his palm over her heart.
"The answer is here. Do you feel it?"
She waited for his reaction. Didn't get one. He simply studied her with his hauntingly beautiful eyes. She shifted her stance and planted balled fists on her hips. "So why are you still in here with me? Didn't I make myself clear? At this point in my life, I don't want to be anyone's girlfriend, wife, mate, or their little human female."
Her outburst didn't appear to upset him. The raw sexual heat never left his eyes.
"Beloved human."
"What?"
He licked his lips. "The term is 'beloved human', but 'my little female' works too. At least as far as I'm concerned. Both mean you're treasured and placed above all others. And you are, Lena. You're special to me. I'll always be drawn to you. Need you."
"I'm a part of you." He lowered his head and blew a warm breath of air over her scarred shoulder. Tingles spread over her body. "Don't you feel me?"
"I'm not sure what I feel. I keep telling you that."
He traced her jaw from ear to chin before rubbing his thumb along her bottom lip. "So you have, and I'm not doing a very good job of helping you figure it out."
"Helping me figure it out? What's that supposed to mean?"
"There's no hidden meaning. I'm trying to guide you, show you our bond, let you see how good it can be." Devin grinned. "I can always tell you what it is you feel, but somehow I don't think that would go over well."
She fought a smile. "No. It wouldn't."
"Then I'll continue to urge you to explore our bond so that you'll figure out what your soul is trying to tell you. You're my true mate."
He rubbed his cheek against hers. "You're perfect for me."
"Am I?"
"Yes. The woman I never knew I wanted."
"The mate bond is powerful, Lena, and we are a pair of the lucky ones. We both recognized our connection, maybe not to the same extent, but it was there. Some pairs refuse to see it or to fight for it. They hold other values and needs higher rather than cherishing the gift given to them by the goddesses."
That feeling of being treasured she'd experienced multiple times in Devin's presence returned, stronger than it ever had. "Is that what I am? A gift?"
"The greatest of all."
With a smile on her face, she touched his cheek. "I'm a hot mess, Devin. A product of unfortunate circumstances, too many failed relationships, and a sharp tongue. That's not the sort of woman who deserves to have a man like you look at her as if she was his heaven."
"But you are mine." Devin took her hand and kissed the fingers she'd stroked over his skin. "You're my everything."
